Magic in Lor

Magic is more abundant in Lor than in the standard D&D setting. This is partly due to the confluence of the planes, which makes basic magic easier to access, and partly due to the abundance of residuum: the silvery, magical dust appears whenever a planar conjunction occurs.

Because the characters probably deal with higher-level magical abilities than most commoners already, they’ll mostly see the effects on magic items. Wondrous magical items occur more often. The empire of Cortel controls the bulk of the residuum supply, however, so the PCs might not have access to it in the raw form.

Any Lorean with at least one mental ability score (intelligence, wisdom, or charisma) above 10, including player characters, can learn to perform a small magical trick. They may choose to gain one of the following cantrips:

Arcane Mark – Lorean Cantrip
A dazzling pattern is inscribed on the envelope, signifying that you were the letter’s author.
Encounter ● Arcane
Standard Action – Personal
Target: You or one object in your possession
Effect: You can inscribe upon the object your personal rune or mark, which can consist of no more than six characters. The writing can be visible or invisible. You may etch the rune upon any substance, even stone or metal, without harm to the material upon which it is placed. If an invisible mark is made, any power or effect that reveals magic will cause the mark to become visible to all until the end of the encounter. A mark is generally permanent, although certain rituals will dispel the mark.

Detect Magic – Lorean Cantrip
You close your eyes and let the energies of the universe wash over you, pinpointing nearby magical signatures.
Daily ● Arcane
Standard Action – Personal
Effect: You immediately make an Arcana check with a +5 bonus to sense the presence of magic without having to spend one minute to do so.

Light – Lorean Cantrip
With a wave of your hand, you cause a bright light to appear in a nearby space.
Encounter ● Arcane
Minor Action – Ranged 5
Target: One object or nearby unoccupied square.
Effect: As per the wizard cantrip light, but you may only use this cantrip once per encounter.

Mage Hand – Lorean Cantrip
You gesture toward an object nearby, and a spectral floating hand lifts the object into the air and moves it where you wish.
Encounter ● Arcane, Conjuration
Minor Action – Ranged 5
Effect: As per the wizard cantrip mage hand, but you may only use this cantrip once per encounter.

Message – Lorean Cantrip
The wind takes your words and wings them along to the recipient.
Encounter ● Primal
Standard Action – Ranged 100 miles
Target: One person whose name and face you know
Effect: You may send a message of up to twenty-five words to the target, who hears it as if you had whispered it to them. There must be a direct connection via air between you and your target; while a draft beneath a closed door will permit the message to pass, an air-tight seal will not, although the wind will travel another route if possible providing it is not more than 100 miles in length. Some wards will also prevent the message from crossing. The message takes 5 minutes to travel per mile, or takes 1 minute to arrive if you are less than 1 mile away from the target. If the target is out of range or unreachable, the wind still takes your words and you are not aware of the delivery failure.

Prestidigitation – Lorean Cantrip
You perform an amusing magical trick, such as creating a dancing wisp of light, freshening a wilting flower, making a coin invisible, or warming a cold drink.
Encounter ● Arcane
Standard Action – Ranged 2
Effect: As per the wizard cantrip prestidigitation, but you may only use this cantrip once per encounter. You may have up to three prestidigitation effects active at one time.

Rapid Heal – Lorean Cantrip
You concentrate, and your wounds close up before your eyes.
Daily ● Divine, Healing
Standard Action – Close burst 1
Target: You or one ally
Effect: The target can spend a healing surge.
